Ridgefield Parks and Recreation Hosts the State’s First Senior Olympics in Pickleball
          By Dr. Darla Shaw

Forty one senior citizens from four states took part in the first ever Pickleball Senior Olympics in Connecticut. Pickleball is the trendy new game for senior citizens that combines tennis, badminton, and ping pong. This two day round robin tournament may have been a first in Ridgefield, but it will certainly not be the last.

“I’m very happy with how well the tournament went,” commented Janice Pauly, tournament coordinator. We had people from age 50 to 80 involved in the tournament and all had fun. Originally we had thought the pickle ball games had be held in New Britain so were pleased to see that they chose Ridgefield instead for the venue.”

Participants at the Olympics were treated to a picnic, a pizza party with entertainment, and a raffle. Comments from the participants were extremely positive. One player from up state New York said, “ I have has been going to Rochester, N.Y. for an annual pickleball tournaments but this one was so much more fun and better organized.

Helping Janice Pauly with the event were Robin Matthews from the Recreation Dept., Alyssa Guastella , intern from Western Connecticut State University, and four interns from Ridgefield High School. All the volunteers learned so much about the sport and see its potential for young people as well. As Supt. of Recreation, Mr. Paul Roche, commented, “ Pickleball is a great sport. It is fascinating as anyone can play it. You can have fun without a lot of technical training. “

Winning medals for their age groups were these area residents:

Herb Pearson: gold (men’s singles), gold (men’s doubles), silver (mixed doubles)

Janice Pauly: gold (women’s singles), gold (women’s doubles) , gold (mixed doubles)

Bill Gagnon; bronze (men’s doubles) , gold (mixed doubles)

Jerry Lohan: bronze (men’s doubles), bronze (mixed doubles)
